(See Acts 2:1-13; see also Joel 2:28-32.) \nThe notion of Easter as a season of 50 days ending at Pentecost is patterned after the ancient Jewish festival of seven weeks that extended from the beginning of the barley harvest (on the second day after the beginning of Passover) to the end of the wheat harvest at the Festival of Weeks or Shavuot (see Deuteronomy 16:9-12). \nThe Festival of Weeks later came to be called Pentecost (“50th day”) by Greek speaking Jews. In Jewish tradition\, Shavuot also marks the giving of the law to Moses at Sinai; this liturgical link may inform Paul’s discussions of the law and the Spirit (see Romans 8\, 2 Corinthians 3 and Galatians 3).

The remaining 60% is used to support ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

SUMMARY:Tenebrae Service of Shadows - March 28th
DESCRIPTION:The Tenebrae Service\, which will be preceded by Holy Communion\, is an adaptation of an early Fourth Century Worship Service. Literally meaning “Shadows” or “Darkness”\, this Service of Shadows utilizes sacred scripture and music to interpret the Passion (suffering) of Christ. The gradual extinguishing of candles symbolizes the growing shadow of the crucifixion looming over Jesus and his isolation in darkness as his disciples desert him. The congregation is invited to leave the church in silence\, reflecting on our Savior’s suffering\, loneliness\, and death for our sakes.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday\, December 24th at 7pm for our Annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. \nThis night you will hear the story of shepherds and magi\, of maiden and carpenter\, of a stable and a star\, of prophets and angels and we too join the Journey to Bethlehem for a blessing.  May the hope that is born anew this night\, in the Christ Child\, be yours to receive and spread far and wide over the months of the year to come.  We are thankful that you may choose to worship with us that evening. \nMay the Christ child bless you with peace\, hope and love. \n
